Religion, politics, whether or not to breed — some people seem to orient their lives and choice of partners on these (mindless?) factors. More fundamental factors such as sustenance (finding the best food and beverages), geography (and climate), and relaxation (books and music) are our common challenges and pursuits. Naturally, I’ve had to share with Ms Chris the music that surrounded and infused itself in me over the years. To aid and abet, she’s converted me into an Apple user and gifted me with a sound system that does great justice to the music I’ve digitized. My father would be pounding the floor mercilessly to have me turn down the volume…

In return, I’ve used music to inspire or augment some of our travels. It’s been our good fortune to be in the US at the same time as Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel have performed. We also visited Australia at the same time as (the remnants of) Queen teamed with Adam Lambert for a series of shows in Oz.

Brian May’s ‘red special’ can still shake a building to its rafters; Billy Joel’s command over the keyboards seems only to have expanded over time, and the Boss has endured the death of close friends and longtime bandmates to deliver nostalgia and new anthems to his fans.

Considering the wife’s diminutive stature, floor seats were not really an option, but recalling a great show by Billy at the Cap Centre many Januarys ago when I sat behind the stage, we snagged great seats with unobstructed sightlines in a similar location for both Billy and the Boss. In Australia, concert-goers are particularly well-behaved, as they remain for the most part planted firmly in their seats. Some of the more rebellious types attract rebukes from venue ushers, but we spontaneous types didn’t object…

Still on the agenda? Green Day, Soul Asylum, Cheap Trick, the Eagles, Meat Loaf, and AC/DC come immediately to mind; Tom Petty, ZZ Top, Brian Wilson, and ELO are right up there too. The remnants of the Who are touring North America later this year, but their latest offering doesn’t inspire much confidence that a live performance will meet with expectations. The Stones continue somehow to persevere, so add them to the list. Yes without Jon Anderson just will not do, but let’s not discount the Wilburys if they can find two other brothers before attrition rates accelerate… Time to study tour schedules and airfares and see if the work schedule can bend to our will!
